Behind the Curtain: How We Run Strategic Workshops That Actually Work

Strategic workshops are where ambition meets reality. They are where leaders must get honest about priorities, tension, and accountability. This article explores why most workshops fail, the psychological traps that derail them, and a process that produces clarity and commitment.

Framework Overview

We combine the Situation-Complication-Resolution (SCR) framework and the Double Diamond model. SCR defines the story and purpose. Double Diamond guides exploration and focus.

Workshop Structure

  1. Preparation Preparation is foundational. We define why the workshop exists, who should attend, and what success looks like. Good preparation includes drafting a clear objective statement, setting expectations with participants, providing relevant context and pre-reading, and ensuring logistics are in place. Preparation creates psychological safety and focus.

  2. Context Framing We start by explaining why the session matters. Facilitators share the Situation (current state) and Complication (why action is needed). This establishes urgency and relevance.

  3. Problem Definition We facilitate discussion to surface the real challenges. We use open questions and prompt participants to name barriers, risks, and hidden assumptions.

  4. Divergence This phase is about broad exploration. We invite all ideas without judgment. Techniques include brainstorming, mind mapping, and scenario exercises.

  5. Convergence We apply criteria to narrow options and build consensus on priorities. Criteria might include impact, feasibility, and alignment with strategy.

  6. Action Planning Ideas become actions. We assign clear owners and deadlines. We define what success looks like and how it will be measured.

  7. Closing the Session We summarise outcomes, confirm commitments, and set dates for follow-up. The closing reinforces shared accountability.

Facilitation Guidance

Facilitators remain neutral, keep time, and surface disagreement early. They ensure all voices are heard and document decisions clearly.
